We are excited to feature local events, business, artisans and products in the Northern Virginia area over the coming months! This post continues the series highlighting Lucketts, Virginia! We look forward to sharing more about the communities, neighborhoods and offerings in each corner of Northern Virginia.
Meet Bruno & JoAnn Grande, the owners of The Soap Chef and residents of Lucketts, Virginia in Loudoun County! We happen to LOVE The Chef's Special (tied a close second to the Meadow Flowers with Cocoa and Shea)! We took some time out to ask some questions of JoAnn and are excited to share her answers with you:
- What is the story behind The Soap Chef and how did it come to be?
The Soap Chef originated from Bruno’s passion for cooking and creating. He has always loved to cook and bake a variety of different foods. The first time he experimented with soap making was 30 years ago. That was just the spark that started The Soap Chef. We have two (adult) daughters who have allergies to certain ingredients in big brand soap, so creating something custom and natural was important to us.
- If the sky was the limit with your business, what do you envision happening?
We would love to eventually expand and distribute soap around the world. That’s definitely not in the near future, as we are just starting out. Right now, we have just made natural/vegan soaps available to the public, but we already have creams, sugar and salt scrubs, lip balm, and more, in the works.
- Is there any recipe / technique that is intimidating for either of you?
There is a liquid soap made with two different types of lye. It’s a longer process with more complex calculations. It’s intimidating, but we are still working towards making it.
- What is your FAVORITE way to spend a weekend morning?
We live next door to one of our two daughters, and son-in-law. We usually take our four dogs to their house on Saturday morning for coffee. We also like to visit local farmer’s markets and antique stores.
- What is your go to place in the Leesburg / Lucketts area to visit, take visitors?
The Luckett’s Store; we love to bring visitors and explore what the outdoor and indoor vendors have in stock.
- What are your favorite ways to give back to others - whether in your community or on a larger scale?
For many years we have donated money to various charities and causes, such as: St. Jude’s, Loudoun County Sheriff’s Department, animal shelters and local music and arts groups. It’s the very least we can do, and once I am retired, Bruno and I will volunteer our time somewhere local as well.
